I

Relative to other Argonians, I was very unusual. I ventured outside of the borders of my homeland, unlike most others of the same race. I learned the language of the inhabitants of Cyrodiil, and became a killer for hire, ending lives just to earn enough gold to live alone. Alone. That word plagued me for many years, to the point where I actually considered going back. All of that changed one night, inside a small inn located in the Imperial Market District.

I looked down at my empty mug. Earlier in the night I’d decided to bet a large portion of my last job payment on a new blue team combatant that looked promising, but lost all of it. Coupled with the cooling weather, I was in a foul mood. It was then that I heard an unfamiliar female voice.

“Excuse me, sir?” said the unseen woman, rather quietly and sounding almost timid.
I was the only other person in the room, so she had to have been talking to me, and I replied unreasonably gruffly, “What is it?” without turning to look at her. I was wearing red robes that I had only recently purchased and had the hood covering my reptilian features. The woman most likely did not know that I was one of the Saxhleel, who were often treated as lower by other races in Tamriel.

She spoke quietly, as if nervous. “Well, I was wondering if you could, well-”

I interrupted her, “Get on with it!”

She replied quicker this time, even more nervously, “Yes, sorry, I wanted to see if you could pay for a one night stay for me...” At this I was slightly surprised. I turned toward her, forgetting she still didn't know my race.“Wha-wait, who are you? No, what are you??” was her surprised response to my lizard like face.

I sighed, “In your terms, I am an Argonian.”

“Oh, well I guess I cou-” she started.

“Look, I’ll pay your rent,” I said, once again cutting her off. At this, the woman seemed to let up a bit.

“I,”she paused for a moment. “Alright. Thank you.”

I looked at the woman who was going to be my roommate for the night. She was dressed in light leather armor, and had a bow slung across her back. Her skin tone and facial features told me she was one of the High Elves. “Well, I assume you would like some time for food and drink before you rest. Do you need gold for that as well?”

“No, I have my own supplies with me,” she said, removing said supplies to eat. She had what looked like salted meat, and a simple skin filled with water. She started eating, quickly but not in a hungry way, more, efficient.

“Fair enough. So, while you eat, tell me something.”

“What can I tell you?”

“What is an Altmer like you doing this far north? Your kind typically resides in the Summerset Isles, do they not?” She looked surprised at the fact that I knew her race. “I've done some research of other races.”

“Well, I can say the same about myself. What’s an Argonian like you doing this far away from the Black Marsh?” It was my turn to be surprised, most others didn’t bother to even talk to Argonians, much less learn of their origins.

“Why indeed...well, unlike most of my brothers and sisters, I left the black marsh, go on a bit of an, adventure, I suppose.”

“It seems research isn’t our only thing in common. Perhaps we could be friends.”

I mused at the idea for what seemed like a long time, but for what couldn’t have been more than a few seconds.I finally replied, “Friends...such people are few and far between for me.”

“I see...well, one can only hope right?”

I realized that she was being sincere, and felt bad for being rude earlier. “I’m sorry, you haven’t caught me on my best day, I’m being rather rude...besides a room for the night, is there anything else you would like to ask of me?”

She seemed to lighten at this, possibly thinking that we were starting to break through the racial barrier, “Well, for starters, what's your name?”

“My name is Amusei.” After a moment when she said nothing, I asked, “Might I get a name from you?”

She looked slightly flustered, and said, “Oh, of course, my name is Linwe. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Amusei.”

“It can’t be that much of a pleasure.”

“No, it-”

I interrupted her yet again, saying plainly, “Save your lies, not my feelings.” During her ensuing silence, I noticed she had finished eating while we had been talking, and said, “Let’s go pay for a room, shall we?”

“Alright.” she said simply.

I got up, and went to the owner of the inn, who greeted me warmly. “Hello! If you would like to rent a room for the night, it will be fifty gold,” she said at first. “Or seventy-five for a two guest room?” after noticing Linwe walk in behind me.

“Yes, I’ll take the two guest room.” I said, handing her the requested gold.

We walked up the stairs and entered our lodging. Inside was a simple room containing two beds, storage chests, and no decorations to speak of. My few belongings consisted of a sharp dagger concealed in my boot, a steel short sword, about one hundred gold pieces, various small journals with a feather pen and inkpot, and some armor. I placed these and my robes into the chest at the foot of my bed, which left me in my shirt and sack pants. Looking over to Linwe, she had done
the same. Without a word, I locked the room door, and climbed into my bed. I fell asleep within moments of lying down.
II

When I awoke the next morning, Linwe was still very much asleep. I yawned slightly and dug around in my chest momentarily to pull out my journal. I silently wrote in it for almost an hour before Linwe sat up in her bed.

“Good morning sleeping beauty,” I said, closing my journal.

She replied sleepily, “What time is it…?”

I looked out the window and said, “Not too long before noon.” She rubbed the sleep from her eyes and swung her feet off the side of the bed. “So what were you planning on doing now that you’ve had food, and rest for the night?” I said after a moment, and she shrugged.

“I was planning on just taking my horse out into the countryside, to hunt for more food…after that, I’m not
sure.”

I nodded. “I assume you don’t have any sort of steady job or apprenticeship?”

“No, most anyone wouldn’t consider an Altmer for anything other than magic using, which isn’t exactly my strong point.”

“Understandably. Most people don’t like the Altmer, seeing them as ‘stuck up’, or being jealous of their magic abilities.” I said, as I knew from noting various citizens social interactions, almost as much as I don’t participate in said interactions. She was quiet for a few minutes, before seeing my journal lying on the bed next to me.

“What are you reading?” she asked, not noting that the cover was blank.

“Actually, I’m writing. It’s a journal,” I said carefully, motioning to the pen and ink. Before she had a chance to ask about what, I explained further. “I record most everything that I do, in case I need it for future reference, and put emphasis on writing the properties of any sort of alchemical ingredients, or any sort of edible resource found in a certain area. I also sometimes sketch maps of places where I could get easily lost, such as various dungeons and cave systems.”

“Sounds like quite a lot to fit in such a small journal,” she mused.

I opened the storage chest, and showed her the other journals. “These are all full of notes, entries, and maps.” She looked at the journals with what almost seemed like awe for a moment, before regaining her composure.

“Thats got to be years of notes...” she said.

“A fairly reasonable assumption,” I replied, completely truthfully. I had been collecting notes for years, having started not long after I left the marsh.

“Can I read some?” she asked, innocently so, but there was no way I could comply without revealing far too much information about myself.

“Ehm, no, sorry, there is some rather,” I fished around for a word that would not seem suspicious, “sensitive information in there.” I said. She seemed to be confused as to what to think about my statement. I saw envy, fear, and other emotions flash across her face. “When were you planning on leaving to go hunt?” I asked, trying to change the subject.

“Oh thats right,” she seemed for a moment like she wanted to go back to the subject of my journal, but either I had read her wrong or she decided against prying further. She continued, “I guess as soon as possible, and,” she seemed to be debating on asking something, “well, will you accompany me?” This surprised me, and I thought about it for a bit. I had come across a rather large abandoned mine, and though I've never really considered having someone come with me, it actually seemed like a good idea, considering the large reduction of risk.

“I will accompany you, but afterwards, I could use your assistance in something else.” I said, hoping to not have to explain until later.

“Okay.” she said, and I felt relief that she didn’t inquire any further.

After a moment of thinking, I said, “We should really get going as soon as possible, we're going to need the daylight.” She nodded, took out her equipment, and put it on as I did the same with my robes.

This is an ongoing story, at least for now, and if you would like to comment on a specific part of the story, or possibly catch me editing it live (there IS going to be some heavy editing still), check out this link here.

Great! I was kinda worried the story might be a bit too esoteric.
