Halimae was sick. The doctors said so.

She sat there on the smooth leather, her slender fingers gliding over the polished wood armrest as her eyes traced the fine grain. There was a swirling babble of words around her, but none of that mattered. Technical terms, odds, names of other doctors for second and third opinions. It was all pointless. This wasn't the first specialist to take a look at her, and it wasn't the first time that she had heard the diagnosis. Her parents were with her, of course, acting all surprised as though they had thought a new face meant a new hope. They couldn't just accept the fact that their freshly-turned-18 baby girl had a year to live, at best.

They had caught it too late. It was progressed too far. She would simply get sicker and sicker until she couldn't move and would have to be hospitalized. The pain would be intense. Excruciating. Don't worry, there are medications for that. You'll be comfortable, even if you lose all function and observe your last days through the dull and unfocused eyes of a vegetable. She couldn't take it anymore.

She stood and walked out of the office, not saying a single word. Her parents, bless them, didn't follow her. They let her go - thankfully they had driven separate cars. Hers was a shiny black Jeep. New, expensive, and one that she was struggling to make payments on. Guess she wasn't going to have to worry about being sent to collections long enough for them to garnish her wages, she thought with a touch of false humor.

Once she was sitting behind the wheel, she started the engine for some background noise and picked up the battered notebook that laid beside her. Inside was a list that she had started when they first found out how sick she was. It was everything that she wanted to do before she died. Every day it had grown a little more, and now she was almost to the point of labeling it finished. A few more, perhaps, if she thought of them. None of it would happen, she knew. Despite the fact that she was a legal adult, her parents hovered over her as though expecting her to combust and die if they dared look away. She felt suffocated. Flicking the notebook shut and tossing it aside, she put the Jeep into gear and drove over to the coffee shop that she had worked at for two years.

When she stepped out, she glanced at her reflection in the window. Messy blonde curls, only a few inches below her shoulders. They framed a pale face with deep gray eyes and boring features that rarely saw makeup. Her frame was slender and short, and she was losing weight little by little thanks to the stress and disease. For now, she was able to hide it with layers. Today she tipped a hat to the cool autumn weather by wearing black yoga pants and a long white tee under a gray jacket. She had never been called a pretty girl by anybody other than her parents, but she didn't let it bother her. People had expectations of fashion models - what was she supposed to do? Seeing the sad look in her eyes, though, told her to avoid her friends. Instead she simply sat on the bench outside and watched people go by, wondering if they all had hidden stress or if they lived the perfect lives that they appeared to have.

He hated exercising. His brother told him that maybe, if he put a little pump-on-the-iron and pedal-to-the-medal, he'd be the hottest looking hunk of boy in the town. All of that was coming from a 29 year old man who ate nothing but Crinkled Lays from a love seat, watching reruns of The Hills. Chase figured out that listening to his brother was going to get him in trouble. Like that time when he listened to him when he told Chase that applying at the movie theater was a good idea. How Robby would know, he didn't think about it, but it seemed good at the time. The two of them were yelling at it sometime during the credits of The Mist. After Robby had tossed the last kernel into the air from the empty, crinkled bag of forgotten Orville Redenbacher, Chase had to listen to all of his brother's ranting.

It started with the movie and how much crap it was. Chase agreed wholeheartedly and even shot in with his two cents on the poor plot development like the little perceptive nerd he was. 19 years in a family that did nothing but watch TV had to latch onto him somewhere. He didn't particularly enjoy the pastime, but there was nothing else he was doing. Except trying to find a job. Oh, but he need not worry. Robby had his back with his coaxing about applying at the movie theater. It had more pro's than con's so that meant good stuff, right? Robby obviously didn't have the greatest train of thought and perceptive way of thinking like Chase did.

He first denied it because it was too far from the house. Robby countered about how, whenever Chase received his pocket full of earnings, he'd have just enough to cover the gas, even more so. Chase added in that he wasn't good with public speaking. Robby told him speaking through a speaker was nothing but a piece of cake. Chase reminded him that speakers amplified voices. Robby went back to talking about The Mist.

It turned out that applying at Hollywild 21 was a horrible mistake. The owner was all pro-public speaking and Chase barely got his address out before he was sent away with a small smile and a promise of another chance on another day. It was a waste of gas driving through the rain to get there on a horribly, traffic jammed Monday. It was a waste of time arguing with his brother about how he was going to be rejected and in what way. It was a waste of effort dressing up in as dapper as he was going to get for a 19 year old without looking like he crawled out of a black and white movie. Chase's life was a waste; just a big old bag of non-recyclable waste.

He hadn't talked to Robby in about a week because he was away on "vacation", leaving Chase to do all of the house chores until his parents got back from the Carribean in 3 months. The parents would have skewered Robby alive if they found out he left Chase alone. The treated Chase like he had 3 kegs of fine beer hidden under his bed, calling half of the neighborhood over to his house for a party of the century. He chewed over the thought while he bought his usual cheese fries from the corner stand next to Miles Park. Maybe a party would have given his life some temporary meaning. More meaning than selling tickets at some crap theater. He screwed his train of thought up when a gust of wind caught the sleeve of his windbreaker, sending his cheese fries flying on a girl's shoe while she sat on a bench.

"Ah, damn."he swore, throwing his head to the side to bite his lip in what he thought would be another string of curses. He jogged up to the girl, looking down at the $3.76 that had now decorated her shoes. He couldn't even bring himself to look up at her, let alone apologize for something he had no control over. Oh well. He wouldn't see her again, anyway. No need to get self-conscious.

"I'm sorry that the wind is such an asshole."he managed to get out, squatting down to where the damage lay but hovering his hands over his tray and fries. He wasn't sure if he grabbed at it, would it make it worse or help her? He pressed his lips together tightly, ready to hear her complaints about how much those shoes costed. The quicker the better. He was only good at being a Samaritan 3 minutes a day.

Hearing faint sounds of chattering and clinking dishes every time that the coffee shop door opened behind her, Halimae couldn't help but think of work. Her friends there had no idea what was wrong with her. She had hid it from them, not wanting them to worry or for her to get fired for being thought 'too weak' or something. Still, they were suspicious. Too many sick days, too many times coming in looking pale.

She had lied her way through all of the situations until people just stopped asking. It was normal now. They accepted that she was strange. She wondered how they would react if she walked in and told them that in a year, she'd be dead. Most of them probably wouldn't care too much. Her boss was a douche who'd only be concerned with hiring somebody new before there was an empty slow, she knew.

She both heard and felt an odd splatter out of nowhere. Blinking, she looked down and saw there was a mess of cheese and fries all over her shoe and the bottom hem of her pants. Where in the world had that come from?

She looked up as a guy came over, looking around her own age. He examined the damage and apologized for the wind. His phrasing made her blink and she smiled, shaking her head as her focus shifted from her inner thoughts to this situation. She leaned down and slid her shoe off, shaking it off to the side before slipping it back on. Cheese-streaked. Maybe she would start a new trend.

"Don't worry about it. It'll be washed off the next time I step in a puddle anyway," she said dismissively. She gave him a smile and dug in her pocket, pulling out a crumpled five and offering it to him.

"Here. The wind is too much of an asshole to replace those."

The wind simply did not let up. The last trails of the storm earlier that week still had a lingering affect on the city; a scary one at that. Kids were ushered into their homes with fear of another storm crashing upon them just as it did the day Chase's interview went askew. Their tiny moans and groans did nothing when mother's whipped their arms into the open doors, shutting them tight and most likely locking them in their wake. The wind, to him, was not that bad to freak out over, but it did some damage to him, at least. The cheese was starting to get cold and crusted on the girl's shoe, but there was little he could do completely get rid of it. The tray of forgotten, stale fries was sent tumbling away in the wind too fast for him to grasp it.

"And now I'm a litterer,"he managed to say before the girl commented back towards him. Commented, not snapped. The lack of bite in her voice brought his eyes up to her at least. He scanned over her features in a quick sweep. She had hair like swaying fields of grass, just painted a different color. The curls cropped the soft edges of her jaw line, strands swaying here and there with the blowing of the wind. The hair around her eyes had been slightly tucked in with a small clip at the side of her head, doing the best effort of keeping it out of her line of vision. Smartly placed clips. They were both pools of a dark gray, those eyes, centered in a perfect position on her face while her petite nose was wedged in the middle. She couldn't have been older than him by the looks of her, but then again, there were some woman that looked extremely young for their age. Chase stopped the line at 'staring' as he looked down to the shoe and shrugged.

"I'll be surprised if water washed away cheese from the hotdog stand. If it does, then I'm an idiot for spending money on dry cleaning,"he added, looking down at his own forest green windbreaker with a shrug. "Yeah, it's not the only time this has happened." His eyes caught a flash of copper from her small, slender fingers and saw the purple number '5' plastered on the back of it. He brought his brown eyes up hers and fought the look of puzzlement away from his visage. He wasn't sure if he was more amused at the fact that she was giving money for the wind or her agreement that it was an asshole.

He decided to humor the stranger. That's always a good thing to do.

"You're handing a complete stranger money for spilled cheese fries?"he asked, eyebrow raising on his forehead. "What makes you think I won't take that money and buy a beer with it? Just because wind's an asshole, doesn't mean I'm not."he said with a teasing smirk, looking over to her. A second went by when the two stared at one another until Chase broke his gaze away, defeated.

"Yeah. I know. I'm not old enough to buy a beer."

Gray eyes locked onto brown and she cocked an eyebrow as he mentioned buying beer. Yeah, right. There was no way that this guy was any older than she was. He definitely wasn't old enough to go buy a beer from any store that didn't want to be shut down. After a moment he went on, and she smiled a bit as he admitted her thoughts had been right. Well, that was easy.

"Beer's nasty anyway. I took one of my dad's once just to try it. Not the best decision I've ever made. I ended up getting sick all over the kitchen and pretty much told on myself," she said, shaking her head. Oh, it had been so nasty.. She had already decided that when she did the 'get drunk' on her list, beer would not be included. At all.

She paused for a moment and glanced at him. He was cute, in that adorably unattainable way. She immediately assumed that he had a girlfriend or was gay because let's face it - all men on the planet fell into one of those two categories if they weren't married. That's how it seemed to her, anyway. Of course, she didn't usually take the time to look at guys. Yes, they were attractive. No, she wasn't a lesbian. Starting a relationship while knowing that you're due to die, though.. She didn't dare. It just wasn't fair to the other person. Hey, I love you, oh and by the way I'm not going to live past my next birthday. Part of the reason that she suspected her mother was so devastated was that the poor woman would never have a grandchild unless she adopted a pregnant woman.

Her phone rang in her pocket and she drew it out, glancing at the screen. Oh, great.

"Just a sec," she said to the boy, then answered the phone.

"Hi, Mom.. I'm sitting in front of work. Don't worry, I'm not dead.. Yeah, I know you hate that joke.. I'll be home in uhh..." she paused, glancing at her wrist that had no watch on it. "Eight hours. Picked up a shift. 'Kay bye."

"There's a bathroom for that," he interjected, still sporting the joking smile on his face. He pretty much had forgotten about the cheese fries and the mess he made. His attention was on the girl in front of him. She looked to be about his age which meant she had to have went through the whole 'high school experience' thing. Ignoring the jocks just because their egos were huge and their testosterone levels were even bigger. Picking her own crowd to hang out with because she just couldn't seem to fit into a certain demography of teens there. Or maybe that was just him. Chase's face pulled into a disappointed frown. He had stereotyped the girl before even asking her name. Then again, why should he? He was never going to see her again anyway. What's the point of wasting the effort for someone who was only going to be nothing but a mere memory?

A light, muffled jingle later and Chase's eyes moved down her pocket where she reached in and grabbed her phone. Oh no. An idea was already bubbling in his head after he just now assumed he wouldn't see her again. Walking away would have been what any other complete stranger would do, but she asked him to give her a second. Meaning she wanted him to stay? The teenager in him would try to get her number. The stranger in him drew the line at 'stalking'. Another high gust of wind blew and Chase grabbed his windbreaker in his tightly balled fist, catching everything the girl was saying to her mother. A very strange and weird conversation, at that. He was borderline eavesdropping when he took into account that the girl and no watch on, but was giving the woman on the other end of the receiver a time. When she hung up, he stayed with the devious smile on his lips.

"Mom's huh? Always wondering where you are 6 hours out of the day but never pick up the phone when you call them." Watch it, Chase. Don't get to comfortable around this stranger. "It was nice meeting you. I'm Chase, by the way. I was just headed in your job, but, sucks for me you're not working." He wanted to know why she lied to her mother about her lack of shift, but how many times had he done the same to his parents and Robby? Robby, the older brother who just dumped Chase alone in the house for about weeks on end. He wouldn't be surprised if he didn't come back by the time his parents did.

Yeah. He needed a coffee.

Halimae locked her phone to keep from pocket dialing her mom back. It would do no good to give away her lie already. She tucked the device back into her jacket where it had been and looked up at the boy with a nod and smile. Oh, yes. He was saying the exact same thing that she thought for years. They freaked out when you didn't answer and always assumed you were dead - especially in her case. Yet when they don't answer, they brush it off and say 'Oh, I was busy!' As if younger people aren't ever busy too..?

"Completely agreed," she said, nodding with a smile. Of course, her mother probably had more reason to be worried than most, but Hali hated that fact. Just because she was sick didn't mean that she wanted to be hounded.

"Nice to meet you too, Chase. I'm Halimae," she said, then stood and laughed. "It really does suck for you. I think Natalie is working right now and she's new. In other words, everything she makes tastes like ass. Especially the coffee," she added, shuddering and making a disgusted face. How that girl managed to get salt in everything, she would never know..

"I'll go in with you and make sure you don't get anything nasty if you want," she offered, nodding toward the cafe since she was supposed to be in there anyway.

Looking up and down at her features, Chase didn't think the girl was foreign. She looked about as American as he did, which was really American; Converse and all. Her name was what brought the thought on. Halimae. He didn't want to say it directly after she did, afraid that if he said it, it would come out sounding completely differently than the way she said it. He chewed over the name in his head first, before rubbing his sweating palms on each sides of his jeans.

"Can I call you Hali for short?"he asked with a shrug, hoping she'd understand where he was coming from. "I mean, some girl's are really big on their names. I don't want to say it wrong. I'll start calling you Helium or something." he admitted. Again, a smile broke across his lips, and , simultaneously, a rumble of thunder broke across the clear, graying sky. It was sign enough for him to get moving to that shop. He absolutely refused to get caught in the rain again. It would just remind him of the failure of an interview at the movie theater. He mentally reminded himself to rip his brother a new one when he got home. Robby had no business spreading his advice to Chase anyway, but his parents were so dense, they pretty much coached Robby into pressuring Chase to apply. Even those three knew that Chase wasn't worth a bag of rocks.

"I don't think you have much of a choice, Hali. Unless you wanna be caught in the rain. Which would just be weird."he said, wrinkling his nose over to her. Then again, she looked like the type to sit in the rain and let the days thoughts wash over her small, plump little face. Chase was beginning to think too much into what Halimae did in her free time. Strangers can be strange like that.

"Alright, then. Let's go. We could both use one if a storm is coming in."he said, ignoring what she said about her coworker sucking at making coffee. In all honesty, all of the coffee at that shop was disgusting, yet he kept going there everyday, spending more money than he needed to. Having wealthy parents did that to him. He took the first steps around the bench to the metal trashcan, discarding the molded cheese plate and what was left of his fries into it. His hands still had salt licking over his fingers in which he smudged on the side of his jeans.

He led the way to the shop, not looking behind him to make sure she was following. Halimae could give him the company he needed until he walked all the way back home, half a mile away. The wind zipped past them again, his hands grabbing the sides of his windbreaker to keep it in place. It coaxed him to cross the street, not even bothering to look left and right for any signs of cars.

"Helium?" she repeated, laughing. She glanced up at the dark skies as thunder echoed around them, then looked back at Chase. "Hali is fine. Most people prefer that anyway. Or they assume that my name is supposed to be hyphenated, like Hallie-may. I don't mind it when people mess it up - I'm just too used to it!" she explained with a smile, walking over toward the shop with him.

"I actually don't mind being caught in the rain. Little kids have the right idea about jumping around in puddles. It makes you feel good, especially if you're angry about something," she mentioned absently, walking behind him into the street.

She looked up at the sound of a car horn that went off right as another crack of thunder did. It masked the sound almost completely. She grabbed the back of Chase's jacket and pulled him backwards quickly, then watched as the car came to a squealing stop some ten feet past where he would have been standing. The driver shouted something along the lines of 'stupid kids' and then sped off. She took a deep breath and released his jacket, frowning at him.

"Pay attention to where you're going," she scolded. "Life is precious, don't just throw it away like that."

She glanced each way down the street, then crossed just as it started to rain. It was probably going to be pouring in a minute, so she wasted no time in ducking inside the little shop and taking a look around. At least it wasn't busy.

Chase was starting to get the feeling that Hali wasn't normal. The whole philosophy about the little kids and puddles was a bit much for someone her age to be saying, especially someone as pretty as her. He classified her as one of those girls that went to school and didn't say much to anybody because all she was concerned on doing was making good grades and getting out of that public hell hole as soon as possible. It felt wrong to stereotype her so quickly, but, then again, what else are you gonna do about a stranger? Write an autobiography on their life? In short, Chase was taken by a slight surprise, especially when some kids behind him shouted in excitement after the roll of thunder. However philosophical she was, she was right.

"Well....yeah." He felt all sorts of stupid afterwards, jealous that she could be right about something so deep. She may have been one of those special girls that had one part of their brain working faster than all of the others. She could have even been the next Einstein for all he knew! Strangers could be anyone in the world; someone special or a serial killer. Chase slid his eyes over to her and watched the wind blow her brown hair around, revealing a blank expression while she walked beside him. Yeah, there was no way she could be a serial killer.

Screeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaach!

Chase heard the sound as soon as he felt his body lurch backwards when Halimae grabbed the back of his jacket. She was pulling no short of choking him with her grasp, but, thankfully, just in time for the car to whirl past them, blaring a loud horn and sticking out an obscenity. Chase swore a couple of times with different emphasis on different words, but it didn't stop him from clutching at his heart while Hali told him off for not paying attention to the road. He stared at her when she said her last statement.

"Geez, how many fortune cookies have you read?" It was the closest thing he could get to a thank you without sounding like an idiot, but he already looked like one. He walked right in the middle of the street without a care in the world and Halimae had saved his life. All he could do to repay her was buy a coffee from her own shop. How gentleman like. The two walked in after the wind slammed the front open, startling most of the people inside. Chase's brown eyes zipped around the shocked looked on everyone's face and smiled, waving his hand on his head as if to say 'howdy.' It was warmer in there than outside, but a late August could do that. The place smelled of nothing but coffee beans and a few pastries here and there. Chase hungrily pulled out a 20 from his pocket and stared at the menu for a long time, not saying anything.

Halimae looked over at Chase as he stepped inside, ignoring how people had turned to look at them. They could hardly be blamed for seeking quick shelter from the downpour that was really getting going outside. Even with the faint din of chatter from the other customers and the confused babbling of the workers behind the counter, the patter of rain against the windows could be heard. It was rather soothing - to her, anyway.

"I do love fortune cookies," she admitted with a smile. "But I meant what I said. I think too many people don't realize what they have. But enough about that - how do you like your coffee? Iced? Latte?" she guessed, walking over to the counter and hopping over it as the girl behind the register looked over with a surprised smile.

"Hali! Please tell me you're here so that I can go home early," the girl said, grinning a bit.

"Not on your life. I'm just here for a couple of coffees," Halimae assured the girl, looking back over at Chase and tilting her head as she waited for him to tell her what he wanted.

It was cold outside but Chase already had his answer before she even asked the question.

"Iced. I think I've only come here and gotten a Frapaccino. A caramel one. I honestly can't see me getting anything else but a caramel frappe." He looked over to her and quickly smiled, pearly white teeth flashing. "That sounded gay, didn't it?" It was a good thing his rhetorical question wasn't answered, because anything she might have said would have been cut off by another woman behind the counter. She didn't look like she was having the greatest time working behind the counter with the influx of customers that was in the shop. It was cold so that meant hot coffee sails were going to go up. That poor thing.

"Not on your life. I'm just here for a couple of coffees."

"Awe, what? I don't get to get a lemon pound cake either, Mom?" She tilted her head to the side, and, at that moment, it was the most adorable thing Chase had ever seen. The way her head lay on her right shoulder and her left cheek was elavated higher than the other, a slow blink masking her eyes for a small second. Chase was staring again.

"Dummm, yeah, uh, Caramel Frappe. I mean," he wheeled to the lady behind the counter and smiled sheepishly, "One caramel frappe please. And a lemon pound cake, if you have any left."

"Completely gay, but I've had worse. I had a woman come in here once and order a coffee - black. Her boyfriend ordered an iced quad nonfat caramel macchiato with sliced strawberries and cream on top," Halimae said, plucking up a large cup and making his drink with ease.

"You're so lucky Brian isn't here, Hali! He'd have your head for working back here without an apron," the cashier, Nina, said. she was referring to their manager, of course. The shop control freak.

"Don't worry about it," Hali said with a laugh, making herself a hot vanilla chai tea with cream. She put them on a little tray with a full-size lemon pound cake. More than she should have gotten, but she didn't care. Sneaking out from behind the counter, she smiled at Nina. "Put it under my employee bill," she said, then nodded to Chase.

"There's an empty table," she said, setting the try down on a small table in the corner by the window.

"Oh man. I would have pretended to cough and said 'Sorry. The sparkles are killing me.' But I'm an asshole like that. i don't expect for you to be as bold to do something like that." He stopped immediately and held his hands out to her, face dropping in embarrassment. "N-Not that you aren't bold! I...I just meant...Damn, I screwed that up." He sighed, his chest deflating while Hali left him to make the two orders. Nina was clearly unhappy about Hali being behind the bar, but she didn't seem to care ar all. Chase shoved his hands in his pockets, overly amused. He decided not to talk on his bad way of conversing with females to her. She would obviously see soon enough.

The two of them made their way to an empty, some ways away from everyone else. It was a tad bit darker there than anywhere else, the only thing lighting the table being a single, swinging, mini-chandelier. It doused a dim light over their heads as Chase pulled out her chair before taking his own. He shrugged.

"Sorry. I am a gentlemen. I know how you girls love your bad boys." His nose scrunched up afterwords, making the biker type smile. He lifted his head again in a 'sup manor. "See? It just doesn't look roght on me. i can't be a bad ass, as cool as that'd be. I can't see you as a bad girl either." He grinned and wrapped his tongue around his straw, pulling it closer to him. Once he did, he blinked down at the atmosphere, eyes reaching hers before flinching.

"Holy shit, I really am homo."

Halimae blinked in surprise as Chase pulled out her chair, not used to such treatment. She smiled and took her seat, then watched him sit down and explain. It was really, really hard not to laugh when he did the queer little head-bob that so many guys did. She couldn't handle it - she started giggling and shook her head, then laughed more as he exclaimed about being gay.

"First of all.. you are completely and utterly gay. Don't worry, most guys who come in here are. I'm sure you could find one that's your type," she teased with a grin, slicing off a piece of the cake and handing it to him on a small plate before slicing one for herself.

"Secondly, I don't like bad boys. They're just that - boys. I don't see why girls are attracted to kids who prance around trying to act tough," she added before taking a bite. Oh, delicious. Lemon and vanilla chai. It was paradise, especially on a rainy day. That thought made her glance out the window - the storm was getting even worse. At this rate, her mother would be calling to make sure a tree didn't collapse on the shop or something.

Joy.

"Is one of them named Keith? I know a Keith and he's super gay. Not...not that I'm interested in him or anything. Stop it, Hali! I'm trying to be serious here!" Chase said, fighting through his laughter. He had to wait until the two of them were done with their laughing before taking a sip of his frapaccino. The moment he did, he uttered a small "mm!" through his closed lips, pulling more of the frozen coffee out of the straw. If he was feeling tired seconds ago, that feeling was long gone. That shop in particular always knew how to get someone high one way or another with their coffee. He looked at her and glared, lips still pressed to the straw. He held the serious expression even when he pulled away.

"No. Seriously. We're being serious. I'm not gay." He waited a second to see if she believed him, but when continued from her previous statement, he figured he was in the clear.

"Woah, woah, now! There are some bad boys that are seriously bad! I'm telling you! There's also some good looking boys that are bad. Good looking as in innocent look...Shit. I'll just shut up." Chase laughed and grabbed a piece of the lemon cake breaking it off and placing it into his mouth. His laughter died out as he chewed on the cake and looked out the window. The storm was raging, making the pounding sound against the windows as if people were running over the roof. He sighed, grabbing his cup and frowning towards the window.

"And I walked here too. Just my luck, huh."

"Ohhh, so you like the innocent types, huh? Those sweet baby faces that hide the inner turmoil of an emotional guy who just wants to rage against the world?" Hali asked sweetly, losing it again. She giggled and took another bite of cake, shaking her head as he mentioned walking. There was no way this storm was going to be over before tomorrow morning.

The cashier girl came over suddenly, dropping off a plate of cheese danishes with a hurried explanation that they made too many. Halimae understood. Often their new baker made too many pastries, and the manager flipped if they threw out food and he found it. She smiled reassuringly at her friend, then looked back to Chase.

"Don't worry about it. I have a car, I'll drop you off when we're done in here," she said dismissively, leaning back and taking a sip of her tea. She pondered for a moment, then looked over at him with a smile.

"So, Chase. Other than being a gay asshole gentleman who gets beat up by the wind, what do you like to do for fun?" she asked, keeping her tone sweet and giving him a perfectly innocent expression as she waited for a response. This ought to be good, if any of his previous comments were an indication.

There was honestly no use fighting her on it because Chase had a feeling she would never let it go. Not after he made too many mistakes and couldn't correct them enough to help his case at all. Instead, he just laughed along with her, putting pieces of cake into his mouth when he had the chance. The coffee was going by slow, so Chase decided to draw out the conversation with her. In short, he was humoring her because, obviously, it was making her happy.

"Damn, I didn't know you met Tom Cruise in person." He said, pretending to fan himself with a damp napkin. The gesture brought on another spree of laughter. A customer or two stole glances at the two of them, finding it odd that they were being so loud in a coffee shop. Usually, that wasn't really the atmosphere. Most who come into a coffee shop are there with their laptops, tablets,a nd work, sipping away on chai and nibbling bit by bit at a cream cheese bagel. The lights were dim for comfort, a soft, swooning trumpet playing from the overhead radio. Chase and Halimae were contradicting the mood with their own.

In short, they gave no fucks.

"Is it a coupe? Oddly, I see you driving a coupe." Chase nearly choked on the frozen coffee once she asked her next question. In fact, he had to pull the cup inches away from his body, just to keep himself from drinking anymore while laughing. "Don't make me prove my heterosexual nature in front of all these people. That's one of my hobbies, you know," he said with a wink before placing his elbows on the table, leaning forward. "Nah. I like to write. I'm a good bowler. Like...legit. I can bowl. No joke. I can cook too, but that doesn't make me any less than a man, and you know it." He glared at her before shrugging, bringing on a sheepish grin.

"I think that's about it. Oh, and walking. Yeah. I do that for fun."

Halimae couldn't help but lose it when Chase started to fan himself with the napkin. She clasped a hand over her lips and giggled helplessly, ignoring the looks of the other patrons. It wasn't as if they'd get kicked out anyway. After several moments, she was able to calm herself down enough to take another bite of the delicious cake and sip at her tea. She smiled as he mentioned her car, then giggled as he winked at her. It seemed to not suit him, somehow, but it was cute. His hobbies were actually rather interesting, and she nodded thoughtfully as he finished.

"First off, no, it's not a coupe. I have a Jeep," she said with a bit of a grin. "And I like your hobbies. I'm not the best bowler - I prefer mini-golf. Not a very good writer either. The last thing I really wrote was a list," she added, laughing a little and shaking her head.

She picked up a cheese danish and set it on her napkin, then paused as her cell started going off again. Gee, how unpredictable. She pulled it out and glanced at the screen. There was really no point since she already knew who it was, but old habits died hard. She sighed and shook her head.

"Mommy dearest," she murmured to Chase, rolling her eyes as she answered. "Hi, Mom," she said, trying her very best not to sound exasperated. As expected, her mother went off on a babbling tangent about how relieved she was that Hali was alright and how the storm was getting very bad. The older woman warned about the flooding in the roads, which Halimae seriously doubted was over a quarter inch. She shook her head slightly and figured she might as well interrupt before her mother started crying.

"Mom, I'm fine. It's just rain. I'm still at work, anyway," she said with a small grin. "I'll be home later. Yes. Yes. Of course. I promise. Uh huh. Okay. Love you too. Yeah. Bye, Mom," she said, hanging up and running a hand through her hair with a quiet groan.

"That woman drives me insane, I swear.."

He nearly swallowed his straw when she told him she had a Jeep. Somehow, there was no way in hog's hell he could picture this cutey on a stick driving a JEEP out of all things. In case he may have overlooked something about her, he looked again. He started with the top of her hair, a brilliant dirty brown. Nothing special and out of the ordinary; just straight until you hit the ends once the hair started to poof, most likely due to the humidity in the outside air. She wasn't built and burly like one of those hardass, buff woman, so he knew she couldn't have wanted it because of it's build. She didn't look like she had any children, so, in short, Chase was allowed to laugh at the new found discovery.

"Holy crap, seriously?! Man, I gotta watch where I walk and who I spill my cheese fries on, don't I?" Chase listened to the rest of her confessions with great interest, cutting in to make a sly joke when she paused. Most of the time, it was them laughing. The cake was all but squared away in his stomach along with the frappe. When it got to the point of the straw making slurping sounds of nothing but air, Chase knew it was time to stop trying to get more of nothing out of the cup. All was well until her phone rang, and, with it, her expression and the conversation fell.

"Mommy dearest." Chase shrugged, and took the empty cups onto the tray, along with ripped napkins and crumb covered plates to the bin only 4 steps away from him. He heard Hali struggle to keep her voice steady while she talked to her mother. Chase sat down in time to see her let out an exasperated breath. He couldn't help but grin, the corner of his lip curling.

"Does she ring the bell for you when supper's ready?" He joked, rising and placing a 5 on the table, merely for getting more food than paid for. The storm wasn't letting up, but he had to go home, even though there was no one there waiting for him. As much as he was having a hell of a day, Chase's life still sucked, succumbing him to remain in his fortress of minor solitude: his room.

"Why does she check up on you every millisecond, anyway?"

Halimae laughed a little and shook her head, standing up and plucking another danish to munch on the way out. She took a bite and pondered how to respond, finally giving up and shrugging a little as she threw a five on the table next to his and moved toward the door at a leisurely pace.

"My mother is one of those overprotective types. You know, the whole.. thinks I'm going to die every second of the day.. thing. She just doesn't get that I'm not five anymore. I'll die when I'm ready, not when I'm at work in a rainstorm," she explained, giving him a half grin and pushing the door open. The wind whipped it fully open and she stepped out, almost immediately drenched.

"This way! It's unlocked - run for it!" she called, laughing as she ran down the sidewalk. She splashed across the street, going out of her way to run through a deep puddle on the other side. Her path led her to her shiny black Jeep, and she thanked her forethought in getting leather seats. At least she could wipe them dry later.

She hauled her door open and dove into the driver's seat, giggling as she slammed the door shut and started up the vehicle. Dripping wet, she flicked the heat on rapidly and reached over to move the list out of the way so he could sit. She set it in the center console and turned down the radio, waiting until he was settled before she looked over at him with a grin.

"You look like a drowned rat. Still fabulous, though."

"I wish my Mom thought I was gonna die at any second. You know how much crap she'd let me get away with? 'Yo, Mom, about that whole cleaning my room thing. Ssss...yeah...see...I'm dyin' soon...'" Chase let the rest of his sentence drown out in a laugh, but, once Halimae propped the coffee door open and welcomed in the wind, the sound was immediately drowned out by splattering rain slapping on the pavement below. Hali took off in a sprint, doing well to bring as much water to her body as possible.

Chase was a little more...tentative.

"Aw, not on my favorite shoes!" He hoped to hell that he was too far for Hali to catch that as he tip-toed and did mini ballerina leaps over the big puddles. Before he knew it, they were both in the car, smelling like nature just took a piss on them, which, in a sense, it did. Chase's hair was now a dull black, plastered to his temples while droplets ran down his cheeks, hanging onto nothing once they met his jaw. Halimae was no better off. In fact, her feet to her mid leg were completely drenched with puddled water.

"Hey, you know, you might wanna start avoiding the giant puddles, not running into them. Oh, wait. I forgot about that whole children fortune cookie thing you told me earlier. My apologies, sensei," he said, starting to laugh before he came into contact with her face. Then, came the teenagers worse nightmare.

"Wow, you look...I mean, well, not bad, just...the rain and all, you know...it's...uh...the uh..." The rain, if at all possible, suddenly dropped down upon the hood of the Jeep, pounding a series of splashes on metal into his ears. it was a very good and much needed distraction.

"Can't believe you drive a Jeep..."

"It's okay to say I look like a drowned rat too, y'know," she teased, sitting up a bit and grabbing a hair elastic out of her pocket. She pulled her dripping locks into a messy bun and brushed a stray curl away from her face as she buckled and shook her head at him.

"I don't see what's so unbelievable about it. They're comfy and awesome," she said, pulling out of her spot and to the edge of the parking lot. She paused there and looked over at him, tilting her head questioningly as she waited for directions to his place.

She hadn't responded to his comment about how much he could get away with if his mother thought he was dying all the time. It was just a joke, and she knew that. Responding now would only draw attention to it again, and lead to uncomfortable questions. She barely knew Chase - it would do no good to start opening herself up to him now. He was just some guy that she had a good time with.

Granted, it had been a long time since she had fun, but still..

Chase shook his hair like a puppy that had just made it inside from a rainstorm, which could have been his case. Droplets of water went everywhere in the car and he gave an apologetic shrug in her direction, brushing off the water that had latched to his jaw.

"Whatever, I know the real reason you got it. To make yourself look bad ass by driving it, because every guy knows they like a girl who drives a truck. Or maybe that's just me." He settled back in the seat and looked to the street, trying to figure out the quickest way to his house. The rain had most likely come from the south seeing as though that was the direction most of the storms had pushed from. Being so close to the Gulf had that problem for them. Chase frowned before leaning back in the seat, folding his arms behind his head.

"I know a short cut to my house that may or may not get us lost. If that's all okay with you, then take a right and get on the highway, Southbound." He closed his eyes and hummed to the beat of a song that was starting. He thought he knew it, but couldn't put his finger on it. The rain was drowning it out anyway.

Halimae laughed a little as Chase started shaking like a dog and throwing water droplets everywhere. It didn't bother her, but it was definitely unexpected. He was nearly as strange as she was. A moment later she dismissed the notion, but at the very least he was good company.

"It isn't a truck," she corrected him with a small smile. "It's an SUV. Besides, I'm not out to impress guys.. and on that note, why would you care what girls drive? Females aren't your type," she pointed out, snickering.

She took a right and headed toward the highway, not having any issues with getting lost. That would mean more time before going home, and maybe even a bit of adventure. Who would argue with such an offer? She drove up the southbound ramp and glanced back - nobody in sight. At least they didn't have to worry about a traffic jam in the storm. She settled back in her seat comfortably and flicked the Jeep to cruise, then glanced at him.

"So.. how are your poor shoes doing?" she asked innocently.
