A Continuation of Awesomeness Empty
PostSubject: A Continuation of Awesomeness   A Continuation of Awesomeness I_icon_minitimeMon Dec 31, 2012 5:05 pm

Because of an inability to continue on the original site, we're continuing an RP here. To sum it up, Endar, a rich dark elf, bough himself a new slave. Taisya, called Taisi, considers herself the perfect slave. However, they quickly find out she's not up to his standards. She strives to please him without fully breaking, which only angers him more. While collecting water, she discovers an old acquaintance, Lucy. Lucy is a former spoiled princess on the run from her father due to adultery. She has lost her lover and her three children and holds a great hatred for her father and husband. Lucy is disgusted with the way Endar treats his slaves, and regrets that she must depend on him from shelter from the men that chase her. While the men are camped out in his yard, Endar's house is destroyed by giants. The giants take two captives, both of which Endar manages to rescue. Endar offers Lucy a solution to her dilemma, partially as a solution to getting her out of his house so she'll stop annoying him.

Below are the last two posts before we left off. It shall be picked up from there.

All the time that Lucy was talking, Endar was concentrating all his energy on listening. Not to Lucy, though. No, he had found something more interesting and, frankly, less annoying, to listen to. He moved over to the ledge and peered out toward the forest. In between Lucy's ranting, he could vaguely make out feint roars and grunts. He wasn't sure what it was at first, although the noises sounded very familiar. The whole time, he was trying to make Lucy be quiet with a few shushes every now and then. He wasn't totally ignoring what she was saying, just not bothering with it because there was something more important on his mind. Soon, though, her words would begin to seep through.

When he finally accepted that he wouldn't be able to distinguish what the cause of the noises were until Lucy stopped talking, he stopped focusing on them and the things Lucy had said began to register. It happened at just the right time because she had just stopped talking. "First of all..." he said, whirling around on the spot and marching over to her "You weren't out there to see the way those men were ogling Taisiya. If I had given them half a chance, there's no doubt in my mind that they'd STILL be passing her around! In fact, the only one who probably wouldn't be interested in her would be the one that's keeping Aste for himself!"

It was only then that he remembered the noises he was trying to listen for earlier. He rushed back to the edge of the tower and listened intently. "I know I've heard those sounds before, but where?" he muttered to himself. Suddenly, it hit him. "Of course!" he said, taking a few steps back. "It's the frost trolls! Of course! They're migrating back north for the winter! This is perfect. The perfect excuse to send them away." He turned back and looked at Lucy. "Go back and find Taisiya." he said "She should be somewhere around the kitchen, down in the basement where I found you. Get something to eat and then wait there until I come and find you. I'm going to go and take care of things with those men once and for all."

He hopped onto the teleport pad and rushed down the floors until he was one floor above the basement. He wasn't sure if he still had a back door, so he just went out the front. Rushing around the tower, he made his way quickly to the back yard where the men were camped. When he came close to being seen, he slowed down to a quick walk. When he got close to the first man he spotted, he said urgently "Take me to your commander. I must speak with him at once about a matter of grave urgency!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lucy glared at his back. "If you didn't have her run around with nothing on, they wouldn't have this problem." She muttered. She knew he wasn't listening, but it really was his fault. Her men were perfectly respectful if the woman was as well. Not having her wear anything was practically advertising that she was out for anyone to use whenever they want. "Maybe you shouldn't be so lustful and actually let her wear a dress around people. If you're taking her to your bed, that's just fine, but you don't have to flaunt it." She couldn't see how he would blame the men in this situation, it was his fault. You couldn't take a woman out, naked, and expect the men not to be interested. It was just plain common sense.
However, she shushed up again as she realized he wasn't even paying attention to her. What was the point? "Oh, whatever!" She snapped at him, then stormed out the door. Even though she didn't like the teleport pads, she took them down to the basement to find Taisi. She was in no way happy about this, but if that was what she had to do, fine. She knew she needed food, and if she stayed with Endar much longer, one of them was going to get killed. And she knew it wasn't him.
Still fuming, she stormed into the kitchen. "It's his fault, and he knows it. He just won't admit to it!" Lucy snapped. Poor Taisi just stared at her, not sure what to say. "And then he has the nerve to dismiss me like that? I don't care if he is helping me, he can't treat me like I'm just another one of his woman! I'm not going to be sharing his bed, making his meals, or following any of his other stupid orders unless he learns to respect me!" She snarled, her pacing taking her along the border of the kitchen, angrily pacing a trail around and around. The young slave could only watch, silent and confused. "And now he's got the nerve to insult my men, and me, and to not even accept the blame for any of it! It's all his fault, he and his lustful, stupid desires."
"Who?" Taisiya asked, not yet picking up on the fact that Lucy was speaking about her master. She couldn't possibly think of him in the ways that Lucy was describing.
"Endar! That god forsaken, lustful, awful man! Oh don't you dare go all noble and defensive of him." She snapped as she saw the look on her friend's face. "He is too lustful and god forsaken." She sighed and sat down on a chair, then buried her head in her hands. "I know, I'm not really being fair. But I hate this. I want to do something for my children. He has everything he needs to offer them justice, and he won't let me use the tools to avenge them. My father was the reason they died. All of them." She started to cry softly. "I just want to find peace in this so I can start to heal."
~~~~

The soldier looked up, a little confused. "What about? Is your house about to start changing shapes again?" he asked, then cast a wary look at it. He didn't trust anything around here any more. This land was filled with evil magics and terrible monsters. He wanted nothing to do with any of this any more. "Come on, the captain's in his tent." He added. Turning away, he wove his way though camp, leading Endar back to where their captain was resting. His son was there too, fast asleep on the captain's bed. The poor boy was just exhausted. All of this had been just a bit too much for him.

"Captain, you must leave!" Endar exclaimed, throwing open the flaps of the tent. Before the captain could ask why or shush Endar to keep him from waking his son, Endar continued. "I was up one one of the higher levels of my new tower, by a balcony. I heard some faint sounds that I was sure I had recognized. When I finally realized what was making the noises, I rushed out here as quickly as I could!"

When Endar finally gave him a chance to speak, the captain replied with a hushed yet angry voice. "Firstly, I'll thank you to lower your voice. My boy needs his rest, as you well know, and you're going to disturb him. Now, I don't know what manner of creature is about to set upon us, but we have survived a giant attack and have no left yet. That alone should express to you how determined we are to complete our task."

Endar glared at the man, baring his teeth and clenching his fists. "Now you listen to me..." He snarled "Giants are truly powerful creatures, to be sure. But they are far from being the most vicious and bloodthirsty beasts inhabitting these mountains. That title is held by the Frost Trolls. Terrible brutes who season their food with the screams of their still-living victims. Their hides are thick as armor and only flame can deter them. Should they set upon your camp, the only way to save yourselves from them would be to set the forest on fire. And let me assure you now, the ire that would cause from the rest of the forest creatures is a wrath even greater than the Frost Trolls!" Endar was practically shouting, now. "The Frost Trolls will waste nothing! No man will lay dead on the battlefield, they will make sure to take them alive! For the safety of your men, you must pack up your camp and go as quickly as possible! From which direction do you hail?"

Dumbfounded and not yet fully understanding of the danger he was being informed of, the man began to respond "Uh...East of here, but..."

Endar cut him off and continued. "East? No, no, that will never do! The Frost Trolls' migratory path lies to the east. I'm sure you must have crossed it on your way here. A large path, the size of any great road? No stones to pave the way, though, only a path beaten into the ground. The trees knocked over and the weeds beaten down. The bones of generations of their meals strewn along the sides?" From the look on the man's face, he knew the captain recalled finding this path. "You must travel westward and southward until you reach warmer weather. Then you must continue south by two days. Only then will you most assuredly be out of the Frost Trolls' path and range.

The captain frowned, displeased with this news. However, he had learned to trust Endar, and as much as he hated to do so, he knew he had to move. "I see." He glanced at his son, then sighed softly. Endar's shouting had awoken him. He wasn't pleased with that, but there was nothing he could do. Ignoring it for now, he kept his attention on the man before him. "I do still have a mission to complete, you know."

"Dad?" The child sat up, his eyes huge. "I think we should listen to him."

Every day his father regretted the choice to bring him more and more. He wished he could have left the boy somewhere less frightening. He thought this would be an easy mission. Go out, grab the girl, get back. Nothing to be worried about. Unfortunately for him, the princess was more clever than he'd thought. He'd always liked her, or, at least, he'd liked her as much as he could like a spoiled, selfish, aristocratic woman. It was a pity she'd turned out to have more feelings and brains than the woman of her class were known to have.

The captain sighed. He had much to do before they could leave. He had men to gather, supplies to check, tents to pack, reports to write, wounds to heal, work to be done. "How long before these things arrive?" He wanted to get as much done as he could before they left. He also had one other thing to attend to. His men were the best trackers around. Things weren't adding up. Along with this, there was that girl Endar had wanted. Maybe he had a bit of a bartering chip.

"Dad?" The boy sat up. He was frightened. "Dad, we gotta listen to him. I don't wanna get eaten. I don't want YOU to get eaten! Please, dad....." He sniffed, trying to be brave. But he was still so young. This scared him.

The captain sighed. "Of course." Crossing over to a chest, he pulled out a map and started to study it. It was a bit empty due to a lack of knowledge of these parts. But it was the best his people had. "How far must we go, Endar?" He inquired curiously. He didn't look up from his map. "And how long must we stay away before we can return?" He traced a path with his finger, trying to figure out the easiest way to get where they needed to be. "You know, this is going to make things very difficult for us. I've come to respect you, sir. During our time here, I've found you to be quite intelligent, though at times a bit apathetic. But you have never even paused when it comes to helping another."

He finally paused and looked up, his eyes searching for an answer. "Are you sure that you don't have our princess? If you would just hand her over, it would be that much easier. We could be out of your hair for good. How much is she paying you? What has she offered? I will triple whatever she has promised you."

"Father?" Not following his father's logic, the boy questioned him. "What are you-"

"Not now, son. We will talk later. Right now, I need our host to be honest with us."

Endar watched the captain as he began studying his map. He was about to come and show him the best route, when the captain began implying that he was hiding their princess. He began to glare at the captain with a look that anyone would be sure could shoot lightning. After a few long seconds, Endar gritted his teeth and said "I have wealth of my own and no need to increase it. I care not for the politics and goings-on of a country that I have scarcely even heard of, let alone visited." He began getting angry again. "Neither a princess nor a captain in an army have anything of value to me, so I have no reason to help either one! I have let your men camp here in relative safety out of the goodness of my heart, defended them from things they could not hope to survive against and this is how you repay me?! With accusations?!"

Still glaring at the captain, Endar slowly walked over, took a bottle of ink and the man's map, held the map up and splashed the ink all over it until it was completely covered. In a few seconds, the ink began to move and swirl, forming a much more detailed map. It showed a few towns, the areas in the forest to dangerous to move through, the parts where the forest was too thick for travel, a very obvious path marking where the Frost Trolls would be migrating. Endar traced a very long and out-of-the-way route with his finger, which left behind a bright red trail. "Follow the red path and you should find yourself back in a position to make your way home. Deviation will lead to death. Stop only here, at this town, for supplies." He marked the town with an 'X'. "There is an Inn there, whose keeper has one leg and only two fingers on his left hand. Give him this..." Endar produced a blank piece of parchment from his robe, made a quick symbol on it, rolled it up and tossed it at the captain. "Tell him to help you procure whatever provisions you will need for your journey and his debt to me will be paid in full."

With that, Endar turned to leave. As he pushed open one of the flaps of the tent, he stopped. "Of course, if you still believe I'm hiding your precious princess, feel free to storm my tower. I'm sure you'll have fun. And when it's all over, I'll find some giant hawks or something to carry back all the corpses of your men. Wouldn't want all the women and children wondering where their men have gone to." He smirked, not looking back so no one could see. With that, he stepped out of the tent and let the flap close.

"I think you made him mad."

The captain sighed. His son was right, he had. But he had too much to worry about right now. Endar was still helping them, he was still on their side. He inspected the map carefully, very pleased with all the details. This would certainly be helpful. Satisfied, he folded it up and tucked it away. He would have to copy this map and send it back to his king. It would greatly help with their expansion and missions. His king would be pleased. Getting up, he headed out to go and tell the men that they needed to get moving.

The child watched his father leave, then frowned. His dad had greatly upset their host, and wasn't doing anything about it? That wasn't right. Deciding to fix things himself, he got up and trotted out the door. Looking around, he grinned, then headed to the castle. He, personally, liked Endar. He thought the mage was interesting and cool. He could move castles around, and fight giants, and do all sorts of things! It was really exciting.

"Hey mister!" He ran after Endar, hoping to catch up. "Wait for me!" He doubted that he'd heard him, though. He chased him all the way up to the castle, following him inside. "Hey, mister?" He reached out, grabbing onto his shirt sleeve and tugging gently. "I gotta talk to you, mister."

He stepped back, looking quite innocent. Though, with most boys his age, that usually meant he was about to get in trouble. Thankfully, he had nothing up his sleeves this time. "Mister, I wanted to say we're sorry. My dad shouldn't have accused you like that. You're a really cool guy, and he was wrong to accuse you of having our princess. He's just really frustrated because he can't find her. He's worried she got eaten or something. He was just really hoping that maybe you had her 'cause if we don't bring her back, the king's gunna be really mad and maybe even demote my dad!"

He tipped his head to the side, staring up at him. "You're really cool. Can you teach me to do the things you do? I wanna be able to wave my hand and be able to move mountains, too! You're the most awesome person I've ever met! Besides my dad, that is. No one's better than my dad!" Typical pride of a young boy. Fathers were one thing that no one could beat. "Please? Teach me? I'll be really good!"

"Hey, mister? I gotta talk to you, mister."

Endar stopped as there was a light tug on his sleeve. He turned and looked down at the boy. The boy spoke before he could. Deciding not to interrupt until the boy finished talking, Endar waited. When the boy asked Endar to teach him magic, he chuckled. "Powers like mine do not come from a few simple instructions." He said. "I traveled far and wide, studying at every institute of magical learning I could find. None of them ever taught me things like this."

He smiled and took a deep breath. "I was an adventurer, you see. When I left one place of study, I set out on foot in search of the next. On the way, I would explore ruins and magical sites. I'd study magical traps and take as many artifacts as I could carry. Tomes of long-lost knowledge containing powerful spells and magical techniques. This is where my power came from. Some not even bookd of study, but stories of mages and the things they did. These are for inspiration. To challenge a mage to recreate the magic described in the book."

"If you truly wish to learn to be a mage, the place to start is one of the places made to teach people magic. It has been a great many years since the basics of magic crossed my mind, and you will need to learn these before you can begin learning what I know. Perhaps if you return one day, years from now, after training somewhere, I may teach you some of what I know. Now, I'm sure your father is missing you. Best you run along."

"But I wanna learn now!" The young boy protested, bright eyed and eager. "Please? You can teach me SOMETHING, can't you?" He smiled sweetly up at his inspiration and added, "You've gotta be the very greatest mage EVER, and that means you can do ANYTHING. Even teach Me! Besides, my dad says you should never forget the basics, because you never know when you'll need them. So you should relearn them and teach them to me at the same time. It'll be...a....a....a challenge! You LIKE challenges, right?"

So young and enthusiastic, the boy looked expectantly up at Endar. Besides his eagerness and youth, he was also human, with a very short lifespan. At least compared to some creatures. It was programed into him to learn as much as he could as fast as he could. He wanted to know it all. How to throw boulders around, and how to turn stones into gold. How to defeat giants, and how to woo maidens. Well, perhaps he wasn't interested in maidens yet, but he would be soon. Swords, however, intrigued him, and he wanted to enchant them all. Shields that could fly, and armor that was invisible. He wanted to make it all, to study it all, to have it all. And before him was the man that could make this possible.

He hugged Endar, giving him the look that always worked on his father. "You're the most amazing man in the world." He declared, a child's innocent flattery at play. "I think you're fantastic. Can't you teach me even a little something? I know! I'll be your apprentice! I'll scrub floors, and haul wood...and...and...uh....clean your...magic...things, and polish your swords! I'm real good at polishing swords! And in exchange, you can feed me, and house me, and teach me all sorts of magic!" He nodded, proud with himself for coming up with the deal. "I'm a really REALLY good worker, and I don't get in the way....much....you can just kick me when I do. That's what the men do. But it's ok, because they don't kick hard, and usually they pat me on the head instead. You can do that, too, it's ok."

He giggled, excitedly looking around. "Oh! You can teach that girl, too! You need to learn the basics again, then you can make her clothes! She's probably really cold without clothes. How come you're so great but you don't know how to make her a dress? Teach me how! I'll get her a really, really pretty dress, just like the princess wears!" Being so young, he still assumed that the princess they were chasing was wearing her ball gowns and tiara. In his mind, she might as well be stepping out of a carriage for a ball, rather than running for her life. "Is she a princess? A magic princess! She's under a spell, isn't she! That's why you've got her here, and that's why she's so strange. She's cursed to think she's a doggy, right? Huh? Now that I know the spell, can we break it? Please? I'll help!"

He was bouncing now, nearly jumping up and down in his excitement. "I'll kill a ogre, and a lizard, and...and...a frog! And we can use them in some potion! And snail shells! And hazelnuts! And witches' toes!" He was shouting now, calling out just about anything that sounded like it might go into a potion. "Let me help! Please! I can do it!" Like an eager puppy, he squirmed a little and looked around. "What do I do? Huh? Can I do something useful?" Beaming up at Endar, the young boy finally paused in his speech, waiting for this great hero to answer.

PostSubject: Re: A Continuation of Awesomeness   A Continuation of Awesomeness I_icon_minitimeSat Jan 05, 2013 8:03 pm

Endar watched as excitement began to take over the boy's face. Then, out of nowhere, the boy hugged him. Endar wasn't too thrilled about being hugged by a little boy he didn't know, but he let it slide. But the boy only gre more and more excited. Soon he was yelling and bouncing and spouting as much nonsense that sounded like magic out of childrens' tales as he could. When the boy finally paused, Endar took a relieved sigh before speaking.

"It seems you have much to learn of the world, not just of magic." He said. "I'll not be the one to explain some things to you. But I will explain the magical ones. The basics of magic are different from the basics of swordplay. They are what let one begin to work a spell. Without the basics, a mage would have no idea how to conjure a fireball or summon a spectre. It is the knowledge of tapping into the magical forces of the world and of ourselves. A mage never 'forgets' the basics of magic, he simply stops needing to think about them. They become second-nature to him while he concentrates on the more difficult parts of more difficult spells."

Then something dawned on Endar. "What has your father said about this?" He more than expected the boy to have come on his own, without even speaking to his father about it. Endar was sure the captain would never have allowed his son to come and request an apprenticeship with Endar, had he known. Endar had found a solid way out. "You should go and ask your father what he thinks. If he says you can stay, then I'll consider it. But if he says no, then I can't let you. Understood? Run along, now. There's a good lad."

Endar sighed as the boy left. He never really wanted to teach magic. At least, not to someone who knew nothing about it. He always thought he might find someone like he was in his younger days whom he might share his knowledge with. A magically-inclined adventurer who would put his secrets to good use once again. An heir whom he might leave all his artifacts and estate to. He certainly didn't see that young boy becoming what he wanted.

Having found and entered the back door, Endar realized he had not had time to study what room he was in. It was a small room, with some wood and a few other nonconsequential things about. He opened the next door and found himself in the kitchen. "Well. Good to know." He said, looking around. Since the change, he wasn't totally sure he still had a kitchen. Which would have been quite bothersome, come mealtime.

PostSubject: Re: A Continuation of Awesomeness   A Continuation of Awesomeness I_icon_minitimeSat Jan 05, 2013 8:31 pm

Slowly the boy's face fell. No, he hadn't asked his dad. But he was already twelve. That was old enough to become a man. He was old enough to make his own choices. He was an adult now! He looked down at his feet. "No, sir." The enthusiasm was gone. He had to get his dad's permission, and his dad didn't like magic. He thought it was the lazy way to do things. He was also scared of it. Magic could destroy a whole army in one blow. Swords and steal couldn't fight it off. Magic gave the user an huge advantage over anyone else. An unfair advantage, as well. His dad would never say yes.

The captain, of course, hid his disdain well, or as well as he could, especially around powerful wielders. Why insult a man such as Endar when he could appeal to him instead? No point in upsetting someone that could slaughter you and all your men if he so felt like it. Sometimes it was best to play it safe. But he had also sworn that no child of his would ever use magic.

The boy sighed sadly, turning away. "I'll go ask." He mumbled, though it was clear from the slump of his shoulders that he wasn't coming back. Reluctantly, he crossed the camp, returning to his father's side. He didn't even bother to bring it up. Better to keep his father from being angry at him, to wait by his side and explore more of the world. He'd just try again the next time they came across a powerful mage. Then, if he was disowned, he'd at least have a place to stay.

~~~~
Taisi looked up as her master entered. She beamed at him, though she had no chance to speak. Lucy beat her to the punch.
"Endar!" The princess offered him a worried smile. "I wanted to apologize. I shouldn't have yelled at you earlier, I'm sorry." Maybe she hadn't been yelling directly at him, but she'd certainly done some yelling about him. And she honestly wasn't sure if he could hear her at all times or not. "I was being very rude, and I shouldn't have left our conversation that way. I know that what you do is important, so please forgive me for what I said." She curtsied to him, trying her best to appease him.
A Continuation of Awesomeness Empty
PostSubject: Re: A Continuation of Awesomeness   A Continuation of Awesomeness I_icon_minitimeSat Jan 05, 2013 11:56 pm
Lost in thought while examining the kitchen, Endar barely paid any attention to Lucy. If Lucy was going to move through the tower, there couldn't be any way the men outside could see her. There were no windows low enough that they could be seen through, but that was only in this room. From the right angle with the right placement of the window, someone might be able to see in. Normally not a big worry, but until the men packed up and left it was something to keep in mind.
"Don't worry about it." He finally mumbled. He was thinking about going to explore his home to make sure it was safe inside. He would need ink and parchment to make maps and a large amount of time to explore every room in every floor. More time than was safe to take, probably. He shouldn't risk leaving Lucy and Taisi alone with the men still around. Then something dawned on him. If the men left, Aste would escape. That would be dangerous. Aste had been there long enough that she could safely move through the forest. Or worse, lead someone back without him knowing.
"Uhh...the men are preparing to leave. I told them they'll have to be gone as soon as possible to avoid catching the attention of the Frost Trolls. Nasty creatures. Deadly, too. The lot of them would overwhelm and devour each and every man out there." Endar said, now worrying about finding Aste before the men leave. "Once they leave, I can start teaching you how to fight. But there's something I must attend to as soon as possible."
He turned and left through the same door, but stopped before going outside. "How am I going to do it, though?" He muttered to himself. He thought for a moment, before... "The boy!" He instantly began to hatch a plan. He slipped out the door as quietly as he could and hurried around the house. The fewer men who saw him out, the better. When he was well out of sight of anyone, he drew a small cirlce on the gound with some strange markings around it. He held out his hand and, in a puff a purple-ish pink smoke, an impling appeared. "You know what I need you to do, yes?" Endar asked, in a hushed voice.
"Shor, too right, mate! I gots ye!" The impling answered in a squeaky voice. It turned and scampered off.
A few minutes later, as the boy waited around while his father made all the preperations to leave, the impling crawled under the tent walls and found a nice little hiding spot. "Oi! Ickle kiddie!" The impling called out quietly. When he caught the boy's attention, he said "There's a wizardly-type fella wantin' a chit-chat wiv ya. He's round the left of the big ol' tower fing!"
"I'm not a cat!" The boy protested, the insult spread across his face quite thickly. "And I'm not....whatever Ickle means!" He was disgusted that this....thing had dared to insult him. However, all that was forgotten mere moments later. This thing could call him a tickled cat all he wanted if it meant Endar wanted to see him! Though, he didn't really know WHY the thing would want to call him a tickled cat. It seemed like a weird nickname. Even so, he decided it just didn't matter.
"Around to the left? Ok! I'll go find him. Thanks, rodent!" He beamed, then burst out of the tent. Spotting his father, his eyes went wide and he slunk back in. His dad had been angry he'd run off. He was grounded right now and not suppose to leave the tent. Thankfully, his father's back had been turned. But for how long? He peeked out, watching the man and looking for an escape.
After a minute or two of planning and plotting, the schemes getting more and more elaborate every second, he realized that all was for naught. His father had just walked off. "Oh well! I'll save them for next time!" He giggled, shushed himself, and slipped off. As silently as he could, he slipped around the tower, heading to the left. He kept a sharp eye out, searching for any sign of the great mage he had to meet.
After a minute, he spotted him. His whole face lit up, and like a puppy to his master, he bolted. "Hello, sir! Your rodent said you wanted to talk to me?" He asked brightly. "I'm here! What do you want? What do you need? What can I do? Are you gunna keep me? Please? I'll work real hard!"
A Continuation of Awesomeness Empty
PostSubject: Re: A Continuation of Awesomeness   A Continuation of Awesomeness I_icon_minitimeSun Jan 06, 2013 9:03 pm
"Indeed." Endar said, smiling slyly. "I've decided to give you a test to see if you're worthy of learning from me. You see, there is a woman hiding with one of the men out in the camp. I saved her and her family from a terrible fate in the forest and they all swore a life debt to me. But she has chosen to abandon honor and attempt to flee. She now hides in one of the tents, kept secret by it's owner, and plans to let whoever is keeping her secret carry her away when the army moves. Your test is to discover which tent she is in..." Endar reached into his robe and pulled out a little grey orb that appeared to be filled with smoke. "And place this as close to her as possible, without her discovering it." He held it up to show the boy. "You will have succeeded when she is returned to me, but if the army leaves and I do not have her, you will have failed. Understand?" He held out the orb, offering it to the boy.
After the boy had set off, Endar made his way around the front of the castle. He didn't want anyone getting too suspicious, seeing both the boy and him coming from around the side of the castle. He came around to the front door and entered. Making his way back to the kitchen. He needed to find someplace to hide Lucy away in case anything happened. The boy had followed him inside the tower, who was to say he wouldn't come in on his own to look for him?
Approaching her hurriedly, he addressed her without the usual reverence one's tone carries when speaking to royalty. "I'll need you to come with me. I have to find a room to keep you in until it's safe for you to roam freely." Before she could say anything, he turned away. Now facing Taisya, he said "I want you to find something to wear and then go about normally. I can't be worrying about what might happen if I don't keep an eye on you. I have more important things to do at the moment."
With that, he turned back toward the door. Looking over his shoulder at Lucy, he told her to "Come along" and hurried out the door. Leading her to the teleport pad leading upward, he took her up a few floors and then began looking for a room without windows where he could leave her. After searching more than a few, he finally found one where the window didn't face the men's camp out back. "This will have to do." He stated, walking in and taking a careful look around. It was a plain bedroom. A bed, two chairs, a writing desk with some parchment, a quill and ink and a bookshelf with a few books of lore and stories. "I doubt they'll move around to the front where they might see you, but try to steer clear of the window, anyway. I need to make a map of the new house and once it's finished I'll make sure Taisya comes to check on you every so often."
A Continuation of Awesomeness Empty
The boy beamed. "I can do it!" He promised eagerly. "Just you wait and see! I'll bring her to you!" He paused, though, staring at the orb. "How is this gunna bring her back to you?" He didn't know, but it was magic, so he wanted to find out. He shrugged it off. "I'll do it! I promise!" He tucked the orb safely in his pocket, then ran back to his own tent. He had a plan, and he needed to execute it perfectly. So he had to hide his sword.
Picking up his sword, he sighed and hugged it. "Sorry!" Now that it was removed from it's place of honor and display, he carefully tucked it under his covers. "There. You'll be safe. I'll come back for you." He patted it gently, then put his pillow on top of the blanket to keep it even more safe.
His father had given him that sword before they left. He was only learning how to use it, and he wasn't allowed to carry it with him when he wasn't training, but he was very proud of it and he loved it beyond anything else. The men knew this. Occasionally, when bored, one of them would sneak in and steal his sword, then hide it somewhere near by. This would result in frantic searches for however long it took to find his sword, much to the amusement of the men. He planned to use this to his advantage, this time.
Running out of his tent he shrieked, "MY SWORD'S GONE!" Several men snickered, already amused. In what appeared to be a haphazardly and frantic way, he started to search though each and every tent. They were lined up in neat rows and columns, making it easy to appear to be desperately searching, when in fact he was doing it quite systematically. Prime numbers first. He did the first tent, the second, the third, skipped to the fifth, the seventh, on to the eleventh. After that, it appeared as if he was just running down the rows, popping into random tents whenever he felt like it.
"Twenty seven, twenty eight, twenty nine!" He muttered under his breath. He ducked into that tent. A quick and frantic search reveled nothing.
"What ya' looking for, kid?" The occupant asked, smirking.
"My sword!" On to the next tent. If he hadn't found her by the time he finished the primes, it was on to the numbers divisible by four. After that, he'd just fill in the rest. He'd find her. Eventually.
~~~~

Lucy looked up, a bit insulted by his disregard for who she was. However, after having been on the run for so long, and on her own for so long, it was nice just to have any interaction at all. At least he wasn't trying to take advantage of her situation. She was starting to see why Taisi saw him as a good man. From a slave's point of view, or best Lucy could related to a slave's view, he wasn't half bad.

She surveyed the room, trying to keep her opinions to herself. It was better than the basement. Not what she was use to, but she had a window, and something to do for one. No more sitting around going insane. She smiled and moved over to the books, her fingers running across some of the titles. Not many she recognized, good. She'd have something to do. "Sir?"

Glancing over at him, she nodded to the books. "Is it safe to read them?" From her experiences, you never opened a book owned by someone with magic. She'd had a friend that did that once. The woman had been turned into a stone frog. It took them three weeks to find her and figure out how to fix it. When the mage had gotten back, she'd been very angry. Lucy didn't particularly have a burning desire to become a stone frog, so she figured it was best to ask.

Endar crossed over and took a look at the books on the shelf. He took a few minutes to check each book, making sure there wasn't anything dangerous. "No, I think these are all fine. Mostly just lores and histories collected from various lands. I particularly like these here..." He motioned to a few books that looked similar "The Myths of Sheogorath. Interesting and disturbing at the same time. Oh, and these two here! 'Palla' volumes one and two. A cautionary tale on the dangers of magic. Getting both of these was rather difficult. I never could find the full set of The Myths of Sheogorath. Give the nature of Sheogorath, himself, it's highly likely that there isn't actually a full set and the numbers on the existing books are just pranks meant to drive collectors mad."

When Lucy was settled and taken care of, Endar hurried off to begin making a map. He went and found a large amount of parchment and ink before starting at the top level of the tower. As he went through each room he'd do the same as he did when he made a map for the commander, pouring some ink on the parchment and magically shaping it into a map of the room. He'd then put it together with the rest of that floor, magically combining the pieces of paper into one like a map puzzle.

When he had the map of the floor he left Lucy on, he took a quick break from making the maps so he could give it to Taisya. He had marked an X in the room where Lucy was so Taisya could find her easily. Upon giving the map to her, he told her to get him a goblet of wine before going to see if Lucy needed anything.

A Continuation of Awesomeness Empty
PostSubject: Re: A Continuation of Awesomeness   A Continuation of Awesomeness I_icon_minitimeSat Jan 12, 2013 6:11 pm

The captain's son beamed internally as he ducked into another tent. There was a girl, that had to be her. "Hi!" He looked at her, confused. "Who are you? Have you seen my sword?" He searched the room, peeking under the bed, searching though the chest, and pulling apart the man's equipment. He pouted, seeing nothing. "Aww, it's not here!" He sulked and sat down next to her, huge tears filling his eyes. "My daddy gave me the sword!"

He sniffed and wiped his runny nose on his sleeve. Taking off his boots, he took them to the side to scratch an itch on the bottom of his foot. He hated when he got itches on the bottom of his foot. Almost as much as he hated loosing his sword. "I don't know where it is, or anything! I really, really need it. Dad's gunna be mad if he knows I lost it, and then I can't give him his gift, because he'll be too mad at me." He sniffed. "I think one of the men took it." Looking over at her, he curiously asked, "Will you do me a favor? I don't want them stealing my dad's gift, too. Can you watch it for me while I find my sword? Please?" He begged hopefully. "I don't want to loose it, it's almost his birthday! His men don't want me to give them a better gift than they got for him, though, so I think they took my sword so they could find my gift. But I was smart, I hid it. But they might find it. Can I give it to you to keep safe? Please?" He giggled and got to his feet, perking up as only a child can. "I'll go get it!"

He raced out of the tent and back to his. Moments later and he'd thrown together a small knife, a map tube with a crudely drawn map in it, a couple of spiders, two small balls, and a handful of other treasures he'd collected along the way. These were all tossed into a bag, and then he was running back to the tent she was in. He walked in and handed it to her, beaming. "Here! Can you please please please PLEASE keep this safe for me?" He hugged her as soon as he had handed it to her. "Thank you! You're really pretty!" He kissed her cheek, then skipped out of the tent, heading back to his own so he could spy on her and make sure she didn't leave.

~~~~
Lucy smiled, picking up one of the books. Not one that he recommended, though. If he liked them, she was sure not to. They had nothing in common. Moving over to her bed, she sat down, curling up with her book and settling in for a nice, long read. Maybe she could pick up some tips from these books. Find some way of rallying her people and of defeating her father. She hated the thought of splitting her land in half, of creating a civil war. But she had to fight back, if nothing else, for the sake of her children. They deserved justice. Children as young as her son should not be executed. Especially not publicly.
The time slid by slowly, and when she finally pulled her nose out of her third book, she had no clue how long she'd been here. She yawned and stretched, then stood up and headed for the door. She stopped. She had no clue where she was, and no clue how to get to a bathroom. This....could be bad. "Endar?" Like he'd hear her from here.
Spoiler:
Aste jumped when the boy entered the tent. She had set up a password with the owner of the tent. He would whisper the password into the tent before entering to let her know that he was coming in. "H-hello." she responded when the boy greeted her. "I'm...I'm Aste." she said as the boy began searching the room. She was nervous and unsure what to make of the boy. "And no, I haven't seen your sword."
She continued watching him as he sat down next to her. She was afraid he may be some kind of trick sent by Endar, but she also thought she had caught a glimpse or two of him running around outside, with the men. When he asked her to watch the present for him, she became even more suspicious, but he raced off without letting her say anything. By the time he returned she had reasoned that he seemed to be too innocent to be working for Endar. When the boy had gone, Aste put the bag somewhere she thought it would be safe.
~~~~~~~~~~

Endar relaxed with his goblet of wine and sent Taisya off to tend to Lucy. Halfway through the goblet, something in his pocket began to buzz. He reached in and pulled out a two-pronged fork. There was enough space between the prongs to just barely fit around the orb he had given the boy. "So it's been placed, has it?" He said, beginning to smile. "Good. Now I'll just have to decide how to go about retrieving her."

A Continuation of Awesomeness Empty
PostSubject: Re: A Continuation of Awesomeness   A Continuation of Awesomeness I_icon_minitimeSun Jan 13, 2013 9:54 am

The young boy sat and watched for hours. Twice one of the men came in and out of the tent, but he never stayed long. That made him very nervous, though. He'd left his boots in there, the small orb tucked into his toe. He'd slipped it in while taking his shoes off. He hadn't known how else to leave it there without her finding it by mistake. And boots were really easy for people to forget about. He was always forgetting his, and then he ran around barefoot, like now, until his father yelled at him and made him put them back on.

He watched, silent and ready, and very very board. Nothing was happening! He'd expected smoke, or an imp to go sailing out of the tent. He expected a huge dragon to sweep down and snatch Aste away. He expected hoards of skeletons, or an army of dwarfs to invade the tent and fetch her off. The most excitement he'd seen was watching a praying mantis catch and eat a spider. That had actually been pretty cool. He had a new pet now. He'd named him Killer.

Killer was currently inspecting his new home and didn't look very pleased.

Bored, the boy got up and made his way to the tent again. Maybe he'd talk to her more. She'd seemed nice. He entered and grinned. "Hi! It's me again." Sitting down next to her, he snuggled into her side. "You remind me of a mother." He said softly. He was, after all, still just a boy. It was hard to be a soldier when he should still be at home, getting hugs from his mother and trying to avoid having her clean off his face. "You're soft, and warm, and you smell like soap. That's what mothers are like." He closed his eyes, content to sit with her. "I like you."

~~~~~
Taisiya, despite the map, found herself with a bit of a problem. "Perhaps," She mumbled as she walked down a hall, trying to figure out where exactly on the mess of lines and characters, "It would have been wise to mention to my master that I can not read before he sent me out on this task." She stared at the paper again, wondering if she even held it the right way. (She didn't, she had it upside down.)
Reluctantly, she moved on, systematically trying to cover every hall and room in her, unfortunately, long search. She had spent a good twenty minutes up there before something caught her attention.
"Endar?"
She beamed, hearing a voice she knew. Darting in that direction, she soon arrived by the princess's side. "My Lady! Hi!"
"Hey, Taisi." She answered, waving her off. "Know where I can go to relieve myself? It's been a while. I think Endar forgot me." She muttered, starting to dislike the man again. "He just put me here to get rid of me, I'm sure."
"Oh no!" Taisi handed her the map proudly. "He gave me THIS!"
Lucy stared at it a moment, then glanced back up at Taisi. "You can't read it, can you."
Taisi deflated. "No."
A Continuation of Awesomeness Empty
PostSubject: Re: A Continuation of Awesomeness   A Continuation of Awesomeness I_icon_minitimeMon Jan 14, 2013 11:40 am
Aste was still a little wary of becoming too comfortable around the boy. Maybe the boy wasn't specifically aiding Endar, but she knew Endar to be manipulative and tricky. He may well be using the boy to find her without his knowledge. She hardly responded to anything the boy said in any way, but she still listened and heard his words. When he sat down next to her, she placed an arm around his shoulder and hugged him.
Meanwhile, Endar had finished his goblet of wine and had moved to an upward room, one with a balcony overlooking the camp. He used the smll fork to pinpoint which tent the orb was in and then scribbled down it's location so he could find it without a bird's eye view. Tucking the paper into his pocket and waved his hand. A chair slid across the floor to catch him as he sat down. "Now, how shall I go about reclaiming her?" He asked out loud.
He began to contemplate what would be the best way to go about it. He wondered if he should go to the commander and tell him he has discovered which tent she was being hidden in. He could have him search the tent and find her. Then again, he had not given the boy instructions past 'hide the orb in the tent' and he had no idea what the boy was doing now. If he had chosen to stay close to Aste, or even in the tent with her, having the tent searched would reveal that he had been dealing with the boy behind his father's back. It wasn't so much that he wanted to ensure the boy would be able to become his apprentice as it was he feared the commander may lose trust and become angry at discovering their deal. He did not fear the wrath of the man, even with an army at his back, but slaughtering them may bring the full force of the kingdom they serve and that would cause trouble with training Lucy.
He could, perhaps, sneak into the tent at night. He had spells to keep her still and quiet. She wouldn't be able to struggle or shout. If he was spotted, though, his actions may be questioned. If the man hand come to like Aste enough, he may even be foolish enough to attack Endar for trying to take her. The death of another of his men may have an ill effect on the captain's temper, as well.
Endar decided there was no reason to reveal the involvement of the owner of the tent. Aste was not an unattractive girl and it has surely been a long while since these men have had any "relief". He was sure any of the other men would have hidden her as well, if they had been given the chance. "It's settled, then. Come nightfall, I shall reclaim her." He said, looking over the edge of the balcony again, staring at the tent.
PostSubject: Re: A Continuation of Awesomeness   A Continuation of Awesomeness I_icon_minitimeMon Jan 14, 2013 3:19 pm
The boy snuggled into her side, a little smile on his face. He liked her, she was nice. He could see why Endar wanted her back. He'd want her back, too, if she'd run away from him. He didn't know why she'd run away again. Maybe she was scared of the house changing. That had frightened him. He'd probably run off if his house changed on him. He closed his eyes. His nap had been interrupted, and his sleeping schedule was all wrong lately. He was rather tired. He yawned, cuddling more into her side. Maybe he'd take a nap here.
He opened his eyes a few seconds later and found that it was dark. "Where did the sun go?" he asked, not realizing that he actually had indeed taken his nap. He blinked in confusion, then looked around him. "Oh! I was sleeping! He'll be mad!" He scrambled to his feet. "I gotta go, I think." He doubted that anyone would be very happy about his nap. Neither Endar nor his father would have wanted him to have fallen asleep there, he was sure of it. And being that he was only twelve, he really, really wanted them to be proud of him. Not angry. "I gotta go!" He ran out of the tent, forgetting both his boots and his bag of stuff.
The fires between the tents told him it was dinner time. "Good, I didn't sleep too long." He said happily. He trotted over to where he and his father usually had dinner together, then plopped down as if he'd never been away. Hopefully his father was so busy talking with the men that he hadn't noticed his son had returned so late.
Thankfully, his father was indeed too caught up in his conversation and in giving the men directions before bed to notice his son's arrival.
~~~~

Inside, Taisi was making dinner. Lucy, after locating somewhere to relieve herself, had taught the young slave how to read the map. Taisi had picked it up rather quickly, and now felt quite foolish for not having been able to figure it out herself. However, with her new knowledge, she was sure she wouldn't be disappointing her master again. She'd even successfully managed to use it to return herself to the portal.

The worst part of the house being changed, she had found, was that her memory no longer helped her. She'd passed a room she remembered, or, at least, one she thought she remembered. However, rather than leading the way to Endar's study, it had been at the end of the hall with no where to go. And that had only served to confuse her farther. Thankfully, she was getting the hang of it now.

"At least the kitchen is about the same." She murmured happily, bustling her way around and fetching the proper spices. Knowing how bad they were for him, she'd taken everything onion related and put it all in a box she'd found. This box was currently hiding under her bed. She didn't want anyone else to be able to poison her master. As soon as she saw him again, she'd ask permission to get rid of them for good.

A Continuation of Awesomeness Empty
PostSubject: Re: A Continuation of Awesomeness   A Continuation of Awesomeness I_icon_minitimeTue Jan 15, 2013 10:46 pm

Endar had gone back to mapping out the house and was now just finishing up. He magically bonded the map of the last room of the last floor to the rest of that floor's map and rolled it up. He stuffed them all inside his robes to keep until he could lay them out properly somewhere. He'd lay them all on top of each other starting from the bottom floor and going upward. Once he had them sorted, he'd study them until he could commit each one to memory. He'd need to get the one he'd given Taisya back first, though. After that, he'd let her study them and the Lucy once the men had gone.

The smell of dinner pulled him out of his thoughts and back to reality. He was on the ground floor now, and fairly close to the kitchen. He'd go and show Taisya where the dining room had gone to so she could bring dinner, then go and have something to eat. He stepped into the kitchen just as Taisya seemed to be getting ready to serve the food. "I've finished mapping the tower." He said, looking at the food. "The dining room has moved, so grab the food and follow me. I'll lead you to it this once. After that, until I finish memorizing the maps, you'll have to make due from memory."

He turned and left the kitchen, expecting Taisya to be following behind him. He walked slightly slower than he normally would, allowing for her to keep the food from falling while she followed him. When they arrived at the dining room, Endar opened the door and walked in. The door stayed open until Taisya passed through, then started to swing closed. He sat down in his big, fancy chair as Taisya served his food. "Go and see if Lucy would like to take her supper in the dining room with me tonight. If not, serve it to her in her room." He said, taking a sip of wine. The only windows in the dining room were very high up, so there was little danger of anyone looking inside. He thought it might be a good idea to see if she had any concerns.
